Forum on July 2: Safety Through Solidarity: Building a Hate-Free Community

Driving while black. People pulling off hijab. Being asked to prove citizenship for “looking Mexican.” Being told you must be rich because you’re Jewish. Hate looks different depending on who you are.

We all want to feel safe and secure in our community, but if we don’t know how hate looks to groups other than our own, how can we protect each other? That’s what this forum is all about.

The event is Tuesday, July 2, 2019, 6:45 pm -9:00 pm at the Central Illinois Mosque and Islamic Center, 106 S. Lincoln, Urbana, IL

Come join representatives from the Jewish, Black, Muslim, and Latinx communities to learn how different communities experience today’s rising tide of white nationalism and white supremacy. Then learn how we can come together to protect each other and create the kind of tolerance we all want to have in Champaign-Urbana. Speakers include: State Representative Carol Ammons; National Field Director for Bend the Arc Susan Lubeck; Latino Parent Liaison for Urbana Schools District #116 Lucia Maldonado; and others. Tracy Parsons, Community Relations Manager, City of Champaign, will emcee our event.

In keeping with the dress code of CIMIC, please: long pants, knee-length or longer skirts; no shorts or bare shoulders. Remember also that everyone takes off their shoes when entering a mosque. Since seating is limited, please print and present this letter or register online at:
