No More Cages C-U: Overnight Event on July 27-28

On Saturday, July 27, a coalition of local organizations is holding a #NoMoreCages public art demonstration and vigil to protest Trump’s mass raids and border cages. The schedule is:
7 p.m. rally, 8 p.m. speak out, 8:30 p.m. candlelight vigil.  There will be a press conference Thursday, July 27, 10 a.m. at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center.

We intend to draw attention to the immigration crisis taking place at the US-Mexico border, but also in Champaign-Urbana. While raids are unlikely to occur in CU, many people are threatened to be arrested after having their asylum cases denied. Children are arriving in our town and are living in cramped housing conditions. Latino Partnership of Champaign County is raising funds for legal assistance and immediate housing needs.

Cages will be erected in front of the Champaign County Courthouse on Main Street in downtown Urbana. There will be art created and displayed by youth who have recently arrived to CU after spending time in cages at the border. Local volunteers will be staying overnight in the cages. The following Sunday morning, we will walk to the Unitarian Universalist Church in Urbana.  Please join us in support of undocumented families in our community. Tell Trump #NoMoreCages and #NoMoreRaids.

This event is hosted by  Latino Partnership of Champaign County NFP. Also see the Facebook event for more information.
