Local high school students continue their work on the issue of gun violence. The Student Activist Organization of Champaign-Urbana will meet this week on Tuesday, June 19, 6 pm – 8 pm, at the Champaign Public Library. They want to talk about social and political change that can be enacted as swiftly as possible. Ideas are welcome! More information at the Facebook event.
Students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people died in February, are likewise continuing their activism. Starting June 15 in Chicago, a group of students from the school are traveling by bus to more than 75 stops in 20 states to “get young people educated, registered and motivated to vote.” (From: NBC Chicago story)
Just a reminder: Since the Parkland, Florida shooting in February 2018, student groups throughout the U.S. have become politically active in calling for common sense gun actions. Local high school students in Champaign-Urbana, formed the Student Activist Organization and worked with CU Moms Demand Action, Everytown for Gun Safety and many other community organizations to organize a March for Our Lives event in Douglass Park in March, 2018. As noted above, their work continues. Watch this space for further reports on their activities.
