June 30 is the day that nation-wide “Familes Belong Together” rallies are planned, as we outlined in an earlier post.
Organizer moveon.org says:
Update: June 20, 2018 Events are on! The executive order that Donald Trump signed today is not a solution to the crisis created by his administration: it keeps kids imprisoned indefinitely and doesn’t reunite thousands of separated families. But it does show the administration is reacting to public pressure, so we will continue to increase our pressure for justice at hundreds of events on Saturday, June 30, to say that families belong together–and free.
Where is Illinois can you find an event? Here’s an updated list of Illinois cities and links, as of 6/23/18: Arlington Heights, Barrington, Chicago, Downers Grove, Elgin, Frankfort, Joliet, Peoria, Quincy, Rockford, Saint Charles, Springfield
What about Champaign-Urbana? As of this posting, a Champaign event is not planned, so as not to conflict with the “Building the Blue Wave” meeting hosted by The People’s Agenda (TPA), Champaign Public Library, 10:30 – 12:30. Here’s a message from TPA about this issue:
“Hey Everybody, We are NOT moving the Blue Wave event on the 30th and here’s why. What’s happening to families at our borders is an atrocity and The People’s Agenda is committed doing our part to stop it. Our tool is the ballot. We have to vote out ALL elected official at ANY level that would condone this disgusting practice. And that’s what we will be planning on the 30th – detailed, concrete plans to ensure that Champaign County has the highest democratic voter turnout in its history.
Go to the event you feel you should be at, both will use your time well, but know that coming to the Blue Wave event is a demonstration of support for families. If this is your first time hearing about the event, please RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/events/371120203291543/
Thanks to TPA, Moveon.org and all the other organizations keeping us informed on both of these vital issues.
